Of the highest rarity, apparently the second known example
Lot 1572
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 5th century BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.27 g, 2 h). Winged hippocamp to right. Rev. Facing gorgoneion with protruding tongue within irregular circular incuse. BMC -. Helios 3 (2009), 59 (same dies, described as uncertain dynast of Lycia). SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. Rosen -. Traité -. Of the highest rarity, apparently the second known example. A beautifully toned piece of wonderful iconography. Very minor roughness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

Exactly where this beautiful coin was struck is unclear. The type was assigned to Lycia in the Helios 3 catalogue, however, it does not look Lycian to this cataloguer, who suspects it originates somewhat further to the East, most likely in Cilicia
